KUSTEM and Penn State sign cooperative agreement
September 8, 2006

Photo of Kustem UniversityThe College of Agriculture and the Malaysian University College of Science and Technology – known in Malaysia as the Kolej Universiti Sains dan Teknologi Malaysia (KUSTEM) – recently signed a cooperative agreement to promote the development of academic, scientific, technical, and cultural relations between the two organizations.

The agreement will provide for the exchange of faculty; joint research and teaching projects; and opportunities for graduate studies. The initial aspect of the cooperation is expected to focus on a joint research initiative directed at Terengganu watersheds and wetlands.

KUSTEM is located in Kuala Terengganu, which is on the eastern coast of the Malay Penisula, south of Thailand on the South China Sea. Given its location, KUSTEM especially is interested in wetland and shoreline issues and preliminary plans include collaborating with scientists in Penn State’s Cooperative Wetlands Center to investigate ecological and economic aspects of the region’s wetlands. Additional preliminary plans include collaborating with researchers in Penn State’s Office for Remote Sensing and Spatial Information Resources on developing GIS/spatial information for the region.

A group of scientists and administrators from KUSTEM, including the rector Profesor Dato' Dr. Sulaiman bin Md Yassin, visited Penn State in late April to initiate the signing of the agreement. Dr. Wayne Myers, professor of forest biometrics and director of the Office for Remote Sensing and Spatial Information Resources, coordinated the visit. While at Penn State they had the opportunity to meet with various scientists and discuss possible collaborations.
