Researchers author chapter on “Ensuring the future of the oceans”

Dr. Bernd Haupt, senior research associate with the Penn State Earth and Environmental Systems Institute, and Maurie Caitlin Kelly, senior research assistant and director of informatics with the Penn State Institutes of Energy and the Environment, authored the chapter “Ensuring the future of the oceans” in the Companion Encyclopedia of Geography: From Local to Global, 2 nd Edition published by Routledge, Taylor, and Francis Group.
The chapter focuses on the impact of human activity on the oceans and the subsequent impact on climate and biodiversity. It discusses historical methods for scientific detection of change, exploration of the ocean, atmosphere, and climate, global ocean circulation, arctic and Antarctic ice as a climate regulator, exploitation of our oceans, and concludes with a description of the impact on fisheries resources.
