Three Penn State faculty named AAAS Fellows
October 30, 2007
University Park, PA – Richard B. Alley, the Evan Pugh Professor of Geosciences; Michael A. Arthur, professor of geosciences, and Abhay Ashtekar, the Eberly professor of physics and director of the Penn State Institute for Gravitation Physics and Geometry, have been named Fellows of the American Association for the Advancement of Science.
The American Association for the Advancement of Science is the world’s largest general scientific society and the publisher of Science. Election as an AAAS Fellow is an honor bestowed upon members by their peers. This year, 471 Fellows were selected for their scientifically or socially distinguished efforts to advance science or its applications. The Fellows will receive certificates and pins in February during the AAAS Annual Meeting in Boston.
Alley was named for transforming the face of glaciology, uniting this field with climate science and for exposing both fields to the general public and government.
Arthur was chosen for transforming our understanding of black shales, using stable isotopes to shed light on the unusual climatic and oceanographic conditions that led to their deposition.
Ashtekar was named for his contributions in the study of general relativity and in the quantization on the gravitational field and for services to the gravitational physics community.
