Project Title: Development of GPS/AML Protocols
Investigator(s):
Barry Evans (Task Administrator for Wilkes University)
Sponsor:
PA Department of Environmental Protection

Environmental Problem Addressed:
Global Positioning Systems (GPS) data protocols.

Research Project Objectives:
Define protocols for GPS data collection and integration.

Summary:
The Pennsylvania State Department of Environmental Protection (DEP) is expanding the use of GPS as a tool for field data collection. The data collected with GPS must ultimately interface with existing DEP databases and standards. Protocols need to be defined to provide consistency for data collection and integration. Wilkes University and the Office of Air, Recycling, and Radiation Protection have jointly developed a conceptual scope of work with Wilkes University designated to carry out the processes and procedures identified to implement the necessary protocols.

Specific tasks include:

  1. Data priorities inventory;
  2. Database design;
  3. Field collection database design;
  4. Mission planning;
  5. Data download and post processing;
  6. GIS spatial database development;
  7. GPS data collection and processing training;
  8. Policies and procedures manual; and
  9. Hardware solutions.

Under the terms of the 1999 Master Purchasing Agreement between Penn State and the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania, Mr. Barry Evans of the Penn State Environmental Resource Research Institute will serve as task administrator for the Wilkes University project.
